Tip #2 to Improve Employee Engagement

Research provided by nearly every employee engagement survey company reveals that more than anything else, leadership and the immediate supervisor drive employee engagement. Over 80% of HR professionals link engagement to trust in leaders (Glint. "The State of Employee Engagement").

Tip 2: Ask Leaders to Share Personal Stories with Employees

Given the important role that leaders play in driving employee engagement, leaders must work hard to gain the trust of their teams. A powerful way to establish trust is to employ one of the mind’s most basic mechanisms for determining loyalty: the perception of similarity. If people can feel a link with you, their empathy for and willingness to cooperate with you will increase (HBR. "The Simplest Way to Build Trust").

When leaders share their personal stories, they will inevitably share insights that will show their teams how they are similar. We encourage leaders to be thoughtful and intentional when drafting their personal stories. We also encourage leaders to share their personal stories with a peer before sharing with their own team. This vetting exercise (1) identifies portions of the story that may need to be edited, and (2) helps build trust amongst peer leaders. Here are a few questions that will help leaders build their stories...

  • What was your path to your current role? Who were your mentors and what professional advice did you find most helpful?
  • Why did you decide to pursue a career in this industry (or with this organization)? If you "fell" into this industry, why have you stayed with this organization?
  • What motivates you to give your best?
  • What is your proudest professional accomplishment?
  • What do you want your leadership legacy to be? What leader / leadership style do you try to emulate, and why?
  • What do you want people on your team to say about you when they are promoted or move on to another role outside your current team?
